Sustainability
A SIMPLE RESPECT FOR NATURE
Our dramatic landscapes and pristine environment are the very same things that draw us all here. We feel that a simple respect for nature lies at the heart of any sustainable practice. As a business that depends on nature, we are determined that with a little thought and care we can leave this place in better shape than when we found it.
WE'VE DIVERTED OVER 40,000KG'S OF WASTE FROM LANDFILL OVER THE LAST 18 MONTHS ALONE
OUR QUEST FOR ZERO WASTE
One day we'd love to say the only thing that enters and leaves Sherwood is people. We've got a way to go, but our bar is currently operating under zero-waste principles with over 60% of our wine bottled in house while in the kitchen, 100% of our organic waste is composted and returned to the kitchen garden to grow more food.
POWERED BY THE SUN
We're proud to be one of the only hotels in the Southern Hemisphere that's powered by the sun. With 248 crystalline panels, Sherwood's solar array was the largest of its type in New Zealand at the time of install and produces over 69,000 kw/h of electricity in a 12 month period with the balance coming from renewable sources.
CLOSING THE LOOP
We're great believers that what goes around comes around. Whether it's returning our organic waste to the garden, sending our leftover soap to be cleaned and reconstituted for use by aid agencies or spending as much of our our procurement budget as locally as we can, we're always looking for ways to close the loop.
