About

“Happiness, not for another place, but this place, not for another hour, but this hour”

Set on three acres of alpine hillside in Queenstown overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables range, Sherwood offers a unique setting to unwind, and reconnect with self and nature

Our recently renovated guest rooms traverse the humble luxury of a lakeside studio to the communal comfort of a queen-size bunkroom and cater for any independent traveller seeking atmosphere and authenticity.

You’ll find the sheltered central garden perfect for spontaneous leisure, sun drenched breakfasts, late afternoon cocktails or a fireside sing-along - while the surrounding bike track, kitchen gardens, orchard and sunset tipi provide many a hidden spot for a picnic or snooze.

Our culinary team specializes in fresh, seasonal, soul food harvested from our own kitchen gardens, orchards and surrounding farms - while the bar team curates an ever-changing selection of independent craft beers, fine natural wine, and rare spirits.

We have a yoga, pilates and meditation instructor plus an Ayurvedic massage offering, along with an ever changing line up of live music, film, writers and artists in residence.

Everything we do is about reflecting a sense of place, a connection to nature and a moment in time. We hope that your stay will leave you refreshed and reinvigorated.

Eat/Drink

“We were together, I forget the rest”

Our kitchen team takes inspiration from our beautiful surrounds and the bounty offered up by the changing seasons. A deep connection with nature and our surrounds defines the food at Sherwood and the spirit of Alice Waters looms large.

Our recently planted kitchen garden and orchard are set to provide a steady flow of fresh, flavor filled, organic produce from which the ingredients required for each service are harvested.

Along with ingredients foraged on our morning walks we collaborate with local farms and independent growers to bring you the finest sustainable produce that our region has to offer.

This same philosophy extends to our bar and wine programme where the very best of New Zealand’s independent producers are shown alongside rare and obscure gems from artisans around the world.

We work with boutique and family owned wine producers and specialise in natural wine that describes a sense of place and time.

Our cocktail list also reflects the seasons and celebrates the scents, textures and memories of our favourite moments and places.

Sherwood Mid-Week Market

Fresh, seasonal, local produce is at the heart of what we do at Sherwood and we’d been discussing the idea of hosting a produce market for some time. We are very excited about Sherwood’s first Market Season 2016/2017 and are humbled by the supportive community response to the announcement. We are committed to being part of building a sustainable, connected community through range of different projects, initiatives and workshops.

The Market key values are local, sustainable, independent, seasonal, affordable, inclusive and community minded, educational, natural. We are committed to becoming a zero waste market, with no waste to landfill created at the market.

We encourage charities and community groups to do fundraising at our market and encourage Community Stalls to follow the same philosophy and principals as all the Stallholders.

Sleep

For the rooms at Sherwood we have sought natural comforts in their purest form, inspiration found in art and culture, balanced against the genetics of a mid-80’s hotel building, and above all a place where you can enjoy good sleep.

Staying with us means a dedicated guest wireless-internet network, priority reservations at the restaurant and bar, priority guest access to yoga and meditation classes.

The room mini-bar is stocked with a curated selection of craft beer, organic New Zealand sodas, and a rotating placement of natural tea and fine spirits.

For comfort and warmth wrap yourself in a thick woollen blanket courtesy of South Island flocks, wash with essential manuka honey & myrtle, gaze upon custom wall art and appreciate the cultural richness of hand woven furnishings.

And if you are enjoying your stay we encourage you to use the in-room stationary set to write a letter to someone you love.

Amenities

We have taken a big breath of Queenstown and mixed it with a few things that we love to have around. Right now we have a freshly planted herb garden with heirloom fruit and vegetables, a dual slalom bike track, native South Island tree plantings and a yoga, pilates, massage and meditation teacher. We’ve also got a developing ski and bike workshop, the speediest wireless internet access we can get our hands on, and to adopt a good thing from our American Indian friends, a traditional tipi if you just need some time in a tent - which we all do at some point.

To support our amenities programme and its continual evolution from July 2015 onwards we will be putting in place a modest charge for our yoga, pilates and bike hire. We hope that you will find value in these these initiatives.

Respect for Nature

renovation

Our aim was to create an environment that allows people to connect with nature through materiality selection, the buidings’ integration with the landscape, and conscious choices about construction waste and operational energy inputs. We feel that a simple respect for nature lies at the heart of any sustainable practice.

We took a lifecycle approach to the renovation and made changes that improved building performance, efficiency and increased comfort without creating unnecesary waste.

Where possible, existing fittings and fixtures that were not at the end of their lifecycle such as handbasins, kitchen benches and some carpets etc have been retained rather than filling landfills. Furniture or fittings excess to requirements were sold or gifted to third parties.

Forging a connection between guests and nature through contemplative room materials and tone, and encouraging nature to meld with the built environment by growing plants over buildings and pushing landscape between buildings.

Materiality

Some of the material options we found for the hotel renovation have included;

Upcycled fixtures, fittings and furnishings

Recycled cork panels for wall linings – these are carbon negative and look great, while improving the insulative efficiency and accoustic properties of the rooms

LED lighting

In those cases where the carpet had reached the end of its lifecycle it has been replaced by floor tiles made from 70 to 80% recycled materials such as old nylon fishing nets.

The linolium has been replaced with a rubber compound made from recycled car tyres

Ex service Italian army blankets repurposed for curtains – look fantastic, while also having superb accoustic and insulative qualities

Solar power generation

Sherwood is one of the largest private solar installs in New Zealand and the solar array is currently generating more electricity than the hotel consumes with the balance being returned to the grid.

There are 248 high efficiency multi-crystalline solar panels across all roof surfaces that showed sufficient potential to efficiently capture solar rays.

The installation incorporates the latest monitoring and evaluation hardware and software and was a modest electrical engineering feat due to the complexity that came with diverse and separate roof structures and multi-arrays.

We are expecting an annual energy yield of approximately 75,000 kwh which should be more than the energy we use over a 12 month period.

Products

Across the entire range of food, wine, beer, spirits, teas, coffees and beverages we try to use products that are local, natural, healthy, ethical, seasonal and sustainable in their production and use. This extends to growing our own produce and supporting local, family and artisanal producers wherever possible. Some of the sustainable factors in our offering include:

A large producing vegetable garden which is being run using bio-dynamic principles is producing over 60% of our vegetable and herb needs for the kitchen within the first 3 months of planting.

Wherever possible our produce and meat is sourced from small, local growers and farmers as well as wild foraged.

We limit waste and take a wholefood / nose to tail approach to our preparation wherever possible.

We make sustainable seafood choices – across both species and catch methods including utilising by-catch.

Beverage selection features - a natural wine edit championing organic and biodynamic wines, an extensive craft beer selection and a curated range of small batch spirits and liquors as well as organic and fair trade sodas, coffees, teas and chocolates.

Waste

All food waste is run through our bio-digestor and returned to the garden as compost. The bio-digestor can process up to 100kg’s of organic waste per day and our hope is that we can extend out composting programme to processing organic waste for our neighbouring houses.

We recycle all possible plastics, paper and glass.

Social

We are highly engaged with our local community and ensure that Sherwood exists as much for locals as it does guests. This extends to the cultural programming and use of amenities.

A programme of garden produce swaps and markets is programmed to begin next summer.

A bike track and bike workshop has been established on site for use by both locals and guests.

A full range of cultural programming is available to locals and guests including live music, dj’s, talks, films and performances, craft activities for kids as well as plans for an artist residency programme beginning later this year.

Wellbeing

Sherwood has a small but growing wellbeing offering including yoga, pilates and massage. Our approach is low cost and no fuss to ensure it is as democratic as possible.

New initiatives coming on-line soon include a native medicinal foraging workshop focusing on teaching people how to identify, prepare and use those superfoods and healing plants that are naturally occurring in the Central Otago environment.

We are also planning monthly classes open to guests and locals alike that focus on the production and preparation of ethical, sustainable, nutritious food and will include butchery, foraging, preserving, gardening, curing, pickling etc.
